Adaptation & Progression - Part 2 of Anabolic Muscle Building Factors

Alright, so hopefully you've read the introductory article on the "10 Most Potent Anabolic Muscle Building Factors"...

Today, I'll be covering the 1st anabolic factor, Adaptation & Progression.

Really, all of your muscle building efforts...infact, the entire process of building muscle revolves around the principle of adaptation & progression.

Adaptation, as a scientific definition, means a change in structure, function, or behavior by which a species or individual improves its chance of survival in a specific environment.

Survival and equilibrium is the main crutch of the human body. Our bodies are always trying to adapt to a given situation and reach a state of equilibrium in which everything's operating at an "optimal" level.

When you hit the gym and start training with weights, the body faces a stress, a challenge that is greater than what it is used to. As an adaptive response, the body reacts by triggering the new growth of muscle, in order to keep you better prepared for the next workout.

Basically, the body has adapted to the "threat" of weight lifting. It views it as an attack, and it is then necessary to signal muscle growth as the appropriate response. Everything in your body is in a constant state of adaptation.

Now, in muscle building, there comes a point in which the body no longer has a need to adapt. This is when your workout is no longer challenging, no longer stressful. Once the body has fully adapted to a certain workout, weights, and/or exercises, it has reached the state of equilibrium which it loves to maintain, and signaling additional muscle growth is no longer necessary...

At this point, the concept of progression comes into play. Progression refers to the increasing of load and/or intensity. The concept of intensity will be discussed in greater detail in future newsletters. Progression is basically improving from the next workout and placing additional stress on your body. This additional stress keeps triggering the muscle building response, provided adequate nutritional needs are met.

Together, adaptation and progression form the most important pillars of building muscle. Without a solid understanding of these principles, you can spend years in the gym without seeing much progress.

Beginners will typically react to any type of workout routine because their bodies immediately adapt to the stress placed on it. However, this is usually short-lived and the reality of "plateaus" sets in. In order to avoid plateaus and continue the growth of new muscle, you must have a solid grasp of adaptation & progression, which will help you choose & modify the right workout routine for you.

Stay tuned for the next newsletter, in which we'll discuss the all-important concept of intensity...
